When it comes to making Spider-Man content, Sony still has control. They only partnered with Marvel/Disney because they thought that would be best for everyone. And Spider-Man: Far From Home’s billion-dollar box office haul proved they were right. But the studio is still free to do what it wants with Spidey and his world separate from whatever is happening with the Avengers. Andy Serkis just signed on to direct Venom 2. We’re just months away from a Jared Leto Morbius movie.

Fortunately, Sony is also responsible for one of the greatest works of recent Spider-Man art: last year’s amazing, award-winning, diverse, dimension-hopping animated adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So it’s great to hear that the folks behind that film are now getting to work on future Sony Marvel projects.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, famous for bringing similar excellence to The Lego Movie before being unceremoniously fired from that dumb Han Solo prequel. Also shout out to Clone High. In April the pair signed a five-year development deal to work on new Marvel TV shows for Sony Pictures. And a report on Deadline sheds more light on what those projects may be.

“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters,” said Miller. “We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience, but are also related.”

The fact that these shows are live-action is what intrigues us most of all. Given the success of Spider-Verse, you’d figure more animated movies would be in the works. But perhaps Sony sees live-action, cinematic TV shows as the best way to compete with Marvel’s own live-action shows coming to Disney+. Just dress up John Mulaney in a pig outfit and we’ll be all good.

For more on Spider-Man look forward (I guess) to the new comic book written by J.J. Abrams and his son, and check out these Spider-Man basketball sneakers from Adidas.
